1. Do you have the linux-headers-generic package installed? 2. This driver might not compile anyway. We've been on Linux 2.6 for years; it's a massive difference from 2.4. I'm surprised you're having troubles connecting via Ethernet. I suspect if you connected via USB you'd have the same trouble.
