I'm also not a statistician. The assumption you're making is that the people who opt-in would be a representative sample of the whole population, and I think this is quite plainly not true. I think there's a high risk of sampling bias causing skewed results. There just needs to be some link between people who tend to opt-in and the sort of hardware they tend to have that is different from the general population, for example, to end up with a skewed sample.
