I chatted with Thierry on IRC and he had a wealth of additional
information regarding this bug.  He even raised the issue on the ubuntu-
devel mailing list:

It also seems it is more widespread than just affecting cifs, see bug
113095 and bug 41794.  Multiple packages are affected here.  I'm
subscribing and assigning this to the ubuntu-foundations team to try to
get a consensus on the best approach to fixing this.

A support customer has reported this issue on Ubuntu 8.10. The original bug was 
reported and confirmed previous to any interaction with the customer.

The bug has not been reproduced. Support can be test and provide relevant 
debugging information if necessary.
