Might there be a table somewhere that maps those numbers to family names? Even if this is on a per-manufacturer basis, I'd be very interested. > Long term (P) and client side: > > * Collect both the model name and the family name and ask the tester to > select which represent better the machine name What if two people with the same system suggest different names? I might say that my system is a Lenovo 7454CTO because that's what the manufacturer recognizes on their website whereas someone else might say they have a Lenovo ThinkPad X200 because that's what is printed on the laptop. Should these be considered as different systems? Which name should prevail? This sounds complicated... As detailed in my previous message, both strings can be gathered from the output of the dmidecode command. This might not be the case in all circumstances but it is certainly relevant for this example. So, perhaps we should report both names when available so that they can be searched and displayed unambiguously. -- Marc Tardif <[email protected]> Freenode: cr3, Jabber: [email protected] 1024D/72679CAD 09A9 D871 F7C4 A18F AC08 674D 2B73 740C 7267 9CAD -- Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-friendly-squad Post to : [email protected] Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-friendly-squad More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
