I can't speak for the developers plans themselves but: 1. Ubuntu ships with unity by default yet GNOME is still installable. Plus this distro exists.
2. Even though Unity next will be based on KDE libs and work on Mir continues, Kubuntu had already said they will not be including Mir support. 3. The GNOME foundation has already indicated they will be supporting Wayland. Ubuntu is about choice. While Ubuntu will be supporting Mir in the default installation, it will not be removing X from the repositories, and will not prevent Wayland when it's ready and stable.
