maanyare, There *is* phonetic keyboard available on Linux for Kannada. You will have to install it, though. Instructions for that is available here: http://dev.sampada.net/wiki/SCIM-m17n-on-Ubuntu
If you want Nudi keymap with the same old fonts, you're in luck. Shashi from Mysore wrote me to inform that they've released 'linek', a nudi alternative on Linux, with K P Rao (nudi) layout.
