It depends on how you use the machine. If the machine has dual boot with Windows and you are using some common partition to transfer data between both OS or if the machine is on a Windows network then probably it is good idea to have antivirus installed. Firewall is inbuilt in the Linux kernel. All you need is a way to manager it. You can install package firestarter for a GUI to manage it.
