Yesterday I started to install that on an old Toshiba Laptop (PIII-600 MHz, 192MB RAM) and it took so long to get out of the liveCD mode that I gave up and installed OpenSuSE 10.3 instead and it installed much more quickly. Try the alternate CD of the same. You can download the alternate CD and burn it into a CD ROM. Pop into your CD drive similar to Live CD, and use the text mode installer especially when you are installing in a system with lower RAM. I would suggest trying out Dapper on lower RAM systems, as it is still LTS.
