If you are using Ubuntu 8.10 this is a Bug. You have to un-install Network
manager.  Network Manager was new addition to 8.10.

We do not have problems with DHCP connection. If it is Static IP and if you
are going to set it up and reboot, what you setup will be lost.

After uninstalling Network Manager, you can manually edit the
/etc/network/interfaces to manually provide the details

and /etc/resolv.conf to provide nameserver details.

I am not sure, whether subsequent updates sent after 8.10 has fixed this
problem. But if you have just installed from 8.10 this might be the case.
