Sure I would recommend you to upgrade to a LTS (Long Term Support) Operating
system which has 3 years of updates (Software updates are most important
part of Operating system due to security reasons). But remember, don't
install any amature ununtu distro version, so wait for at least a month
after 10.04 is released so that most common bugs are debugged...

64 bit is great, better performance than 32 bit and most importantly your
computer will not reset in 2038 AD. lol...
The hardware specifications looks good for 64 bit.

OpenJDK : No coments
