If suitable driver is not found and if it is supported by HPLIP http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/downloads.html It will prompt for download from a terminal and install drivers. On few models where I had trouble in installing command line utilities like hp-doctor checked, diagnosed and fixed the driver challenges by itself, saving downloading different packages by itself and/or answering few questions. Unfortunately, I did not keep a list of supported printers with Ubuntu versions I used in my customer places.
