Hello I have been using kubuntu for about a year now, some of that time as my primary desktop os. I would rate my knowledge level at high, although I am not a linux kernel hacker or any such thing...but as far as computer experience in general, it is higher than much of the general public.
As such, I have one major complaint, and one or two suggestions. First complaint. I upgraded to 6.06 lts from 5.10. I did it by a full on install, due to replacing my hard disk. 6.06 has been very stable for me, and although I keep it up to date, I find myself not using it as much, as some of the things that I wanted it for, don't work anymore. I originally wanted to do video editing on it, due to the generic windows applications I had laying around, all were either crippleware or just plain didn't work. So I downloaded the library packages for Cinelerra and had it working until they broke it for Ubuntu by using a library that outstripped that available for ubuntu, and then it uninstalled itself due to a break in packages. So I waited a while, meanwhile installing anything in Adept that said 'video' or 'edit', but really nothing besides Kino works, and it isn't really useful fo me, because it is primarily a capture program (at least that is what I have heard) and the KDE applications don't work for video editing. They just fail and die. So recently I discovered that you were feeding software to us through another source, because I guess the packages for the applications had outstripped 6.06 lts. Hmmm. Funny how that works. Lives works from that source...although it has its issues. SO to my complaint. After buying the 6.10 alternate upgrade cd, the Kubuntu cdupdate just flat does not work. I am told I have to use adept to do it, but read on the news lists that people have crashing systems all over by doing it that way. So after buying a copy from linux cd source in France, I am not going to mess with it. I will use the cd to install on a new system or two, but would like you all to know that there is some very valid feedback on this point in your mailing lists, and it is vital. Basically there are reasons people have gone to Ubuntu family. And you are letting those people down now. The technology looks good, but there are other people doing similar stuff. Personally Diabolix multimedia edtion with Open Mosix is looking good right now... or Knoppix. But your Kubuntu has been very usable and overall stable (even though I have to spend a certain amount of time at the command line to get it to do what I want. But you won't be able to have your general users do this. So beware. Laptop support. Kudos for being so full of support for laptops. I have an IBM 600e that had a pentium 2 in it, and Kubuntu runs pretty well on it. It recognized my aetheros wifi card natively in 5.10 with no problems. 6.06 had some problems. Wifi not working very dependably. But I did add a pentium 3 500 mobile processor to it, and that could be messing with the power management. One thing I could wish for would be the ability for the OS to recognize its a 686 or 386 or Athlon and install that kernel natively. Turn on the cache automatically. Having the sources natively for the kernel on the cd would be nice, in case we have to compile a video driver such as the NVIDIA one.... and no internet connection is available. (say we have it on the hd already or a cd, but no Internet). Linux does not recognize the cache on my upgraded Laptop due to the Bios not recognizing the p3... so the cache doesn't run without hacks. So far I haven't been able to get it to speed up in Kubuntu.... but I have taken some time off on the problem. For what it is it is quite usable (although slow) for a 100$ laptop. I spent a whole summer out on the road driving truck long haul using it at motels and wifi hotspots to communicate with friends and home. Thanks. Well thanks for the ability to feed back to you. Keep up the good work. I am interested in Open Mosix, so I hope you guys will continue to support the 2.4 kernel for awhile yet, as their 2.6 kernel support isn't really ready yet. As far as comiz and beryl... that stuff is neat, but please focus on upgrades, stability, and problems with software.
