Hi everyone, Recently there has been a flurry of discussion regarding the marketing efforts in the Ubuntu community and how we can best manage and architect those efforts. I would like propose a direction for how we should work - this just a proposal, so feel free to discuss, debate and disagree if needed, but I think it will provide a cohesive direction for us to work from..
In the Ubuntu project there are three primary stakeholders in marketing: * The Canonical Marketing Team - comprised of Gerry, Kat and Larry, this team performs general purpose Ubuntu marketing as well as marketing Canonical commercial services and agreements. A very active team with a defined goal and direction. * ubuntu-marketing - a community team there to spread the message of Ubuntu to different demographics. Traditionally the team has been mixed in terms of activity, often having long periods of limited activity. * LoCo Teams - individual localised user groups that advocate Ubuntu to people and support local users. Many LoCo teams are very active and do consistently good work. In terms of community, we have typically focused very much on the ubuntu-marketing team, and after the discussion at UDS I think we need to spend our time better enabling and supporting LoCo teams in their advocacy efforts - LoCo teams are out there right now, on the ground doing excellent work, and there is a huge amount of opportunity for us to help LoCo teams become more and more effective - this could include sharing best practise, development of high quality materials, community-wide campaigns and more. I am by no means suggesting that the ubuntu-marketing team should be dissolved, but I think it is a team looking to define its direction and roadmap, with no clear leadership inside the team, and is as such, struggling. In the LoCo community we have many leaders as well as the new LoCo Council, and I think it could be wise for the ubuntu-marketing team to focus on how we can better enable LoCo teams, so that when LoCo teams are out there advocating Ubuntu, we as a project are making the most of those opportunities. I think we have a huge opportunity here to make our LoCo teams really slick advocacy units, but helping to support them with this kind of work. If we get this right, community marketing could offer a huge contribution to Ubuntu. :) Jono -- Jono Bacon Ubuntu Community Manager jono(at)ubuntu(dot)com www.ubuntu.com / www.jonobacon.org -- ubuntu-marketing mailing list ubuntu-marketing@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-marketing
