I tried some time ago (before knowing about UM) Ubuntu-generic (now it seems we need a new name to call vanilla ubuntu, lol) from a LivePenDrive (not sure if it was Hardy or Intrepid alpha) and I got to the desktop without any problem. I'll burn newer images (hardy, intrepid, mobile) to pendrives and see if I get anything out of it.
