You should probably refer to /usr/share/doc/nis/NEWS.Debian.gz in the 22.04 version of the nis package which explains what changes the Debian maintainer has made and how users are expected to configure/use the packages in the new version. Failing that, you can try asking on https://askubuntu.com.
