I totally agree. (Trying to) Fix FTBFS bugs is often one of the early steps for new devs and without any guide I feel this task is pretty complicated.
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MeetingLogs/devweek1007/GetStarted gives a couple of hints (missing library, request a sync), maybe it could be a starting point.
