This may be due to bug #1307981 [1] or just that the search was performed before network became available. You can check ~phablet/.cache/upstart/scope-registry.log for errors related to the search, and likely will see a "host not found" error. Doing a manual search for an app should resolve it, unless the local DNS cache on the phone is caching the resolution failure, and just always failing to look up the host on future attempts. If that happens, rebooting may also "fix" it.
