The terminal shouldn't give any other message, and that means the core part of it booted fine. Best you can do then is checking if unity8 / lightdm are up. We had a weird lightdm issue (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/upstart/+bug/1318681) some days ago, but we got a workaround in place if you use an image >= 28. If lightdm is not running, try running 'start lightdm', and see if you can get something at least. /var/log/lightdm/ might be useful as well.
