Man använder hplip istället, där skrivarens drivrutin ska vara välunderhållen och supportad. :) Ubuntu skeppar med hplip och den drivrutinen borde valts... men om inte kan det också vara värt att kolla upp. HP är en av de bästa märkena att välja för skrivare (och scanners mm) just för att de har öppna drivrutiner till nästan allt.
