Thanks guys - as you say the upgrade appears to have worked and the response from the 'team' unbelievable . I suppose there are several things I take from this experience; 1. If the process of updating is still running even with 'error messages' - let it. 2. Even while updating I had access to Firefox to 'search' for 'now what...?' 3. If only the process of installing WinXP SP3 were 1% as pleasant/reliable as this... (sorry...)
