yeap i did install and reinstall it. when i uninstalled the second time, i
'apt-get remove postfix' and then i manually deleted /etc/postfix directory.
then i reinstalled it 'apt-get install postfix', gave no error but when it
tried to start, it failed.

so i followed your directions (apt-get --purge remove postfix) and
reinstalled it and it's working fine now. i guess when it failed ealier it
was because of missing /etc/postfix? i was hoping that when i reinstalled it
would recreate the whole directory but it didn't in my case?
