I don't have debian, don't want to learn how to install it, I'm an (x)ubuntu user remarking about ubuntu.
It's not "developers who have mistakenly installed.." that interest me. I've got a fresh install and a book on Ruby -- that doesn't make me a developer I think. I didn't install it by choice; it's just there. I type "ruby" and I get Ruby. I look at the packages installed and it says "ruby" with a version number that's close enough to 1.9, so I expect Ruby. If the package had been named ruby-minimal, I would have saved myself about a day of fooling around thinking I needed to follow gem instructions or some such. I would have had a clue this package was minimal, and that a maximal, full or functional package might exist and might be worth looking for. I use synaptic generally, and it happens that when you inquire about "ruby" the -full package is a bit hard to find and is not even marked as an Ubuntu package, so there is not much to draw the eye to it or hold it up as the solution to the problem. I try pretty hard to stick to packages with the Ubuntu marking. If ri(1) had said "Nothing known about Array, but perhaps you want the -full package" I would have had a clue. If ri(1) had been completely missing, I would have had at least a little clue. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to ruby-defaults in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1264050 Title: The basic ruby package does not point ruby developers to the -full package sufficiently well To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ruby-defaults/+bug/1264050/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
