No, --xattrs works fine in 14.04. The problem is that it must be used. Note that you also have to use --xattrs-include=* while creating the tar to make use of it (which is, IMO, a bug, as if I said --xattrs, I meant _USE XATTRS_. ;) Anyway, another problem is that 12.04 tar does not support it, so the tarball images are not consumable from the previous release, which is a problem for a shop trying to upgrade. I think that may be a worthy SRU, as tars with xattrs will start to become more and more commonplace over the next 3 years that 12.04 is still a supported platform.
