Fixed. In a (misguided?) attempt to do a clean install of samba, I archived all the files in the /etc/samba directory into a zip file. With those files in the zip file, the install showed the above error. After uncompressing those files and re-running the apt-get install, the install worked and the samba demon started correctly. The files were:
st...@zippy:/etc/samba$ ll total 72 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 30 2009-05-30 20:28 dhcp.conf -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 8 2008-06-30 09:56 gdbcommands -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 15251 2009-05-30 20:58 old-samba-files.zip -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 12552 2009-05-25 11:43 smb.conf -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 12551 2009-05-16 19:07 smb.conf~ -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 12416 2009-05-14 19:16 smb.conf-original I haven't taken the time to figure out which file the daemon was looking for but I think we can chalk this one up to user error. =) -- Was attempting to install Samba https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/382034 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to samba in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
