There are no significant errors in vsftpd.log, and the authentication request does not seem to reach the PAM MySql auth module (nothing in auth.log). I managed to temporarily fix the problem following this thread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2218804) which reports the same issue.
