Thanks for filing this bug in Ubuntu. Could you please attach /etc/samba/smb.conf? The smbd service is failing to start and the logs do not say why. It could be an incorrect configuration setting in that file.
If you prefer, you can run testparm(1) against it yourself. It can highlight many configuration problems: testparm /etc/samba/smb.conf I'm marking this bug "incomplete" for now.
