The bug being tracked here is specifically related to the nmbd server not starting. Can you please confirm that your boot-time start error has the same log output as Alain's in <https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/samba/+bug/462169/comments/15>, using 'log level = 3' in /etc/samba/smb.conf?
