Hi Chuck,
The /etc/rc2.d/S50ntp script was never changed. My machine has been
through three upgrades (Intrepid, Jaunty and Karmic). When I examined
the file I discovered that it was an actual file and not a sym link
to /etc/init.d/ntp. When I replaced the file with this sym link and then
ran 'apt-get install -f' the install completed successfully. I don't
know when or how /etc/rc2.d/S50ntp became a file, but it is definitely
not something I did deliberately. I hope this helps you.

Regards,
Joe.
