             Thank you for your response. I didn't remove samba-common along 
with samba but i just got this resolved by copying the missing smb.conf file 
from a different ubuntu machine I have.
The status now is that domain resolving is very slow after installing samba, 
for example when I type www.ubuntu.com, my computer takes forever to resolve. i 
am pretty sure that it is due to misconfiguration because I have boost cable + 
64 bit machine with 6 Gs of memory + quad core proc but I dunno how to go about 
resolving it. Thanks,
