Past experience (and googling) suggest synaptic might have been running in the background, or a previous dpkg may have hung. Can you paste the output of 'ps -ef' in this bug report? Check for 'synaptic', 'apt*', and dpkg, and, if you don't see any of those, then re-try the mysql reinstallation?
