Can you try running instances, as described at the bottom of that bug?

I am also able to discover the node now with: sudo euca_conf --no-rsync --discover-nodes :-)
I'll try running some instances, but I don't that described in the bug. Is there a testcase or a doc on the wiki that describes running instances? If not, I'll figure it out.
