Ex 2.6.39 the kernel has something that can be called "rt patch
emulation". 3.0 is just a number and not something comparable to the
steps from KDE3 to KDE4 or GNOME2 to GNOME3. Debian already is at
2.6.39, but anyway there's the need to build a kernel with the correct
preempt option yourself, additionally there's the need to add
"threadirqs" to the GRUB command line.
