While Ardour4 does not need jack anymore, it still works better with jack than without. MIDI especially works better as jack provides sample accurate MIDI events. Also, Ardour4 with alsa has some limitations that running Jack can get around, such as using a different device for input and output... which (unfortunately) is becoming more common.
