Hi all,

Fresh Virtual 15.10 Ubuntu Studio usage notes

Is this the right mailing list for this? If not please redirect.
It may at first impression look like a list of bugs, but it is not.
It is a description of what a first time user experiences. It just so
happens ... go figure.

Get a Ubuntu 15.10 Virtual box guest running on a Ubuntu Studio 15.10 host.:
host:
    danny@studiojuju:~$ uname -a
Linux studiojuju 4.2.0-14-lowlatency #16-Ubuntu SMP PREEMPT Fri Oct 2
06:14:58 UTC 2015 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
    u@us15X6:~$ uname -a
Linux studiojuju 4.2.0-14-lowlatency #16-Ubuntu SMP PREEMPT Fri Oct 2
06:14:58 UTC 2015 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Just before I started, I did apt-get upgrade the host and I saw some
suspect messages I had not noticed earlier:
No such key 'show-notify-osd-on-scroll' in schema
'com.canonical.indicator.sound' as specified in override file
'/usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas/20_ubuntustudio-default-settings.gschema.override';
ignoring override for this key.
No such key 'auto-launch' in schema 'com.ubuntu.update-notifier' as
specified in override file
'/usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas/20_ubuntustudio-default-settings.gschema.override';
ignoring override for this key.

I proceeded, ignoring this. But I noted it; maybe someone here knows if it
is important, or, even if it is not, how to get id of these distractions.

1. Live DVD
The virtualbox needs more than the 8G advised. 12G is ok.
Make sure to enable bidirectional clipboard.

The live guest starts ok, and e.g. in firefox downloads ´Open Containing
Folder´ Thunar starts, which is as expected. I did not check sound yet with
the live guest - don´t know enough really. Later. I plan to rerun the live
DVD when I get it working in the installed version.

Proceeding to install, the shutdown before the first installed run did not
finish cleanly. It hangs in a text-mode screen.
I could only take a screen-shot (the bidirectional clipboard did not work,
but I expect that that only works from one GUI to another - but even GUIGUI
did only work sometimes). As I don´t want to discuss just texts from
screenshots; ocr to the rescue.
    me@host:~$ sudo apt-get install gocr
Note : put it in the toolbox for testing.
    $ cd ~/VirtualBox\ VMs #default directory created by virtualbox
    $ gocr -i us15X6-1.png -o us15X6-1.txt
    $ cat us15X6-1.txt
Ubuntu Studio

I do not know whether this is severe. When I power down the vm and start
again, Ubuntu Studio does start ok.

2. Installed first run
Firefox´s ´Open Containing Folder´ starts audacity. Strange, and I want it
to work properly, even just for testing. Remember, in the live DVD session
thunar was started, which is ok. First check: Preferred Applications >
Utilities File Manager > says Thunar. Apparently Firefox´s gets its
information from another place than were this is stored. Second check
worked so gives a workaround to wherever this inconveniance is caused. Here
goes:
>From the topmenu Xfce 4 Setting Manager > System > Mime Type Editor set
all/allfiles to thunar.
I restarted firefox, forgot to check if that was really necessary. Its
´Open Containing Folder´ started thunar as hoped.

3. It looked like I could not access any USB devices connected to the host
from within the guest.
https://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch12.html#ts_usb-linux says:
¨If USB is not working on your Linux host, make sure that the current user
is a member of the vboxusers group. On older hosts, you need to make sure
that the user has permission to access the USB filesystem (usbfs), which
VirtualBox relies on to retrieve valid information about your host's USB
devices.¨

So: $ sudo adduser $USER vboxusers
Yep, does the trick. USB devices appear in the guest.

4. Not yet solved:
x Bidirectional clipboard does not always work.
Trying to worka round that: share a directory.
After filling out ´Shared Folder´ in the Settings of Oracle VM VirtualBox
Manager ...

Ok. So far.

This takes lots of time. Time well spent if it helps. Does it?

PS. mandatory toolbox items :-) : gawk, gocr.
Kind Regards,
                          Danny (irc:Troubadour)
