I'm replying to my own post:

It works!!

Actually Freebob was working fine all along. I just thought it wasn't 
because aplay -l didn't work, and because when I clicked on the sound 
icon in the top right I got a 'no soundcard found' message - but I guess 
these things don't matter when you are using freebob. In fact the only 
reason I wasn't getting sound was I had the wrong input selected on my 
Firewire Solo, d'oh!

I feel slightly silly, but maybe some other dumb newbie like me will 
read this post and find it helpful :-)

And wow, the sound quality with the Firewire Solo is so much better than 
when I was using an onboard soundcard!!
