It's an upgrade, so there likely are messages available by a log file.

https://startpage.com --> apt-get log file ubuntu -->
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=28627

https://startpage.com --> upater log file ubuntu -->
http://askubuntu.com/questions/98359/does-the-update-manager-have-a-log

In addition run the software you're using for the update in a terminal
and post this messages.

If the update fails regarding to issues that aren't related to the
update software, what does ~/.xsession-errors say or any other log, e.g.
for running daemons etc. pp. in /var/log/?
