You could always try out with the --dry-run option ;). The apt-get manual page for Trusty (14.04 LTS) doesn't mention an option --install-recommends-generic or --install-recommends-lowlatency, http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/trusty/en/man8/apt-get.8.html. Tested on a Wily install: [weremouse@moonstudio ~]$ sudo apt-get install --install-recommends-generic --dry-run [sudo] password for weremouse: E: Command line option --install-recommends-generic is not understood What do you want to do? Upgrading from a backports repository? Upgrading from a PPA? Executing a release upgrade? Upgrading from 14.04.2 to 14.04.x is a normal, averaged upgrade, just run sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade or sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade as you are used to do. Trusty 14.04 LTS isn't Utopic 14.10. Available media are 14.04 LTS, 14.04.1 LTS and 14.04.2 LTS, but no 14.04.3, see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases . This are normal, averaged upgrades, you can do as pointed out above. If you want to do a release upgrade to Utopic, then take a look at http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/trusty/man8/do-release-upgrade.8.html. AFAIK it's not recommended to do an Ubuntu Studio release upgrade. It's better to make a new install. There are tools to get a list of packages of the old install and to install them on the new install.
