I think <ebordon> is missing out the session selection at the logon screen.
The following answer may be the answer:

When at the login screen of Ubuntu, only select the username from the center
menu. After that a menu "Session" will come at the bottom. Select "GNOME" in
it.
Now enter password and enter into GNOME session, that we usually call the
Ubuntu session too.
