*About Ubuntu/Welcome* Welcome to the Ubuntu Tour! If you have prior experience with using Ubuntu, feel free to skip this tutorial. Click Next to start. *What is Ubuntu?* Ubuntu is a free, open source operating system targeted at personal computers. It is based on Debian GNU/Linux and uses GNOME as its desktop environment. This operating system concentrates on usability, easy installation, and freedom from legal restrictions. One of the more popular alternatives to commercially available operating systems, Ubuntu offers a full range of desktop applications -- productivity, graphics, audio, video, and connectivity -- presented in a free, simple, and highly intuitive interface. It is sponsored by Canonical Ltd., a private company founded by Mark Shuttleworth. ---------- Ubuntu offers a rich desktop environment easily accessible through its intuitive user interface. Applications, user and system preferences, documents, folders, and system management tools are easily accessible through the Menu, located on the top panel of the desktop. * The Applications Menu* Ubuntu categorizes installed user applications under the Applications Menu. This menu provides access to software that falls under Accessories, Games, Graphics, Office and Productivity Tools, Sound and Video, and Internet Connectivity. The Applications Menu has the following sub menus or categories: Accessories - Ubuntu comes with several accessories such as the Calculator, Character Map, and the Terminal, among others. These handy applications are all listed under this category. Games - Ubuntu comes with pre-installed games such as Sudoku, Mine, Solitaire, and many others. Games installed later will also be classified under this category. Graphics - Software for viewing and editing images are listed under this sub menu. Internet - Applications for internet connectivity such as web browsers, email and chat clients, and the remote desktop viewer are listed here. Ubuntu comes pre-installed with Mozilla Firefox, Empathy IM Client, and Gwibber Social Client. Office - Productivity software such as word processors, database, spreadsheet, and presentation applications are classified under this sub menu. A fresh Ubuntu install comes with OpenOffice productivity software. Sound and Video - Software for playing, burning, and ripping music and videos are listed here. Ubuntu comes with its own pre-installed applications such as Brasero Disc Burner, Movie Player, and Rhythmbox Music Player, among others. --------- The Ubuntu Software Center. The Ubuntu Software Center is a catalog of free applications and other software that may be installed on a computer running Ubuntu. These applications, assigned under categories such as Education, Graphics, Developer Tools, Games, Fonts, and others, can make your computer more useful and powerful. The Ubuntu Software Center lets you find applications by name or by category.
