With a great deal of help from my son the problem appears to have been solved. What I did was to change the line in Kino - Edit - Preferences - IEEE 1394 labelled dv1394 Device to /dev/dv1394/0. Why this should work I have no idea but I have repeated the process of plugging the camera in several times and Capture controls the camera as it should. Ah well, if at first you do not suceed . . . .
