Hi Ian,

You can save the output of dmesg by:
 $ dmesg > output.txt

However, to see what is really happening I would suggest:
        $ dmesg
        Plug in the USB drive
        $ dmesg

This will allow you see what new events are happening when you plug the
device in.

If an event does appear and it's not mounting, it could be a udev.rule
bug.  In that case, a bug report really needs to be made.
