Regarding the idea of using a website, Firefox on Ubuntu does report that it is 
running on ubuntu, however, all the statics packages I've come across only know 
it as `Unknown variant of Linux`. If you can, get hold of the server's logs. 
Some statistical checks on that should give you an idea.
