What card is it and what driver do you have installed (ie do you use the restricted driver?) ATI cards don't work nicely (if at all) with Compiz, though much depends on the age of your card and the driver you're using. If it's an older card and it doesn't work with the free driver then it probably won't work at all. If it's a new card then you might want to try using the latest driver direct from ATI (ie not the restricted driver from Ubuntu) which should work now (as of about two days ago).
