I had exactly the same thing with my dad's laptop.  I changed the key on 
his router (he was using WPA with a pre-shared key) and it worked fine 
after it was changed.  I'm not sure if there is a minimum length it 
should be.  I think my dad's one was set to 8 characters and it worked.
