I'm running Ubuntu 6.06 LTS server on an old Pentium 3 667 and an  
Athlon 800 and it works fine.  From experience I've found the more  
memory you can give the machine the better.  You can install XFCE on  
it but I would have thought it would dump on a load more packages too  
if you install the xubuntu-desktop meta package.
