Okay, can you be a bit more specific on what you're using to burn the DVD? Are you using the built in DVD burning on Ubuntu (using Nautilus), with Brassero or K3b? Do you get any error messages at all? Is it an ISO disc image you're trying to burn or is it a few individual files? You could also try some DVD-R or DVD-RW discs too, it may be that the firmware needs updating on the drive, although if you can let us know if you are getting any error messages and what software you're using we can probably help you more.
