(Folk here who've used virtualisation for ages may have forgotten the
sheer gleeful delight you get the first time you see WinXP running
inside a window on your Ubuntu box. :-) )

WinXP has now done its updates.  I've got Guest Additions installed;
and I've also activated the usb (disabled in Gutsy) as per
http://virtualbox.org/wiki/User_FAQ (section labelled USB on
Ubuntu/Gutsy). Now to install some antivirus and a firewall. Then good
to go on the two apps I have to use Windoze for. (Am I imagining it, or
does WinXP actually run *faster* in VirtualBox than I remember it doing
on the PC?)

despite the additional complications you ran into. Many thanks for
starting this thread, and giving me a push into actually installing VB.
  You do initiate some very useful discussions here - don't stop!)
