To get this to work with my laptop I have to plug the external monitor/projector in to my video out port, go to System -> Preferences -> Screen Resolution where it is detected and select the resolution and position of the screen. Unfortunately the only way I can then get output to that screen is by restarting my laptop with it plugged in. Fn+F7 (or in my case Fn+F5) does not work for me.
