I tried it last year and didn't like it at all, it lasted for about 
1/2hr on my machine.

If you have enough RAM (about 1GB or more) you can install distros 
insode a Virtual Machine to test and play with which can be a good way 
to experiment.

VirtualBox is in the Ubuntu Repos and is easy to use for this purpose.
