Even if they do switch to empathy by default and the facebook chat hack plugin hasn't been ported to it yet, you could still install pidgin from synaptic and then install the facebook chat plugin. I like pidgin and probably won't switch to empathy in a hurry, but so long as pidgin continues to be easily available and empathy doesn't *really* suck, I don't care.
